Safety aspects play an increasingly important role in many automation systems and designs, especially where the safety of personnel is at risk due to hazardous movements. Safety requirements are documented in regulations such as the EU Machinery Directive (Directive 2006/42/EC) or in the occupational safety regulations of various countries.
The Safety at Work concept of AS-Interface allows the seamless integration of safety components, i.e., safety sensors and actuators, as well as safety monitors, into virtually any common automation system. The advantage of ASi Safety at Work over conventional safety solutions is the ability to transmit both safe and unsafe signals over the same cable. This eliminates the previously required redundant infrastructure and the costs associated with complex and error-prone parallel wiring.
ASi safety components can be used like any other standard node at any location in the ASi network, in combination with standard ASi components without any limitation or restriction. The ASi master treats the safety components just like any other normal ASi node. Safety sensors, safety actuators, and the safety monitor work together in a special communication environment.

AS-Interface
AS-Interface (ASi) is a globally standardized fieldbus system for the first level of automation. The abbreviation ASi stands for Actuator-Sensor Interface. ASi connects sensors and actuators to a controller via a single two-wire profile cable. The yellow ASi cable simultaneously transmits power and data. The main advantages of AS-Interface include significantly less cabling, free topology choice, and cost-efficient integration of safety on the same infrastructure.
The latest ASi-5 generation can now handle larger data volumes with much higher transmission speeds and makes the integration of intelligent sensors, such as IO-Link, easily possible.

For our safety solutions, only a profiled two-wire cable is needed. Thanks to the piercing technology, the installation is waterproof: modules can be simply plugged onto the profile cable, which is protected against polarity reversal – exactly where they are needed. The modules can not only be powered via the two-wire cable, but all safe and standard signals are also transmitted via the cable. This eliminates the need for expensive dual infrastructure. Our PC software ASIMON360 allows for comfortable parameterization of safety technology.
